In 1964, a hastily organised secret naval mission to Cyprus ends in disaster—armed conflict and loss of life, followed by decades of silence. This memoir recounts the experience of its commander, Dimitris Mitsatsos, a young Hellenic Navy officer leading the patrol boat PHAETHON in a heroic but doomed battle against the Turkish Air Force. Severely injured and sworn to secrecy, he rebuilds his life, facing personal loss, guilt, and societal prejudice. The mission is finally declassified in 2016, but it is too late for many involved. Blending naval history with personal testimony, Dimitris Mitsatsos offers a powerful story of courage, resilience, and the enduring cost of war.

Περιγραφή

A secret, hastily organised naval mission to Cyprus in 1964 ends in armed conflict, fails, costs lives, and remains classified for 52 whole years. This is the memoir of the commander of this

ill-fated mission, a young Hellenic Navy officer in his 20’s then, named captain of the patrol boat PHAETHON, which fought a heroic battle against the Turkish Air Force. The author, now one-handed and sworn to silence, embarks on a new, second life and career. He studies at the Polytechnic University of Athens, adapts to the different realities of the business world, and struggles against the prejudices and pity of those around him, but primarily against himself and the guilt over the loss of his friends and fellow sailors.

In 2016, the State finally lifts the secrecy—far too late for the relatives of the six Greeks and the one Cypriot volunteer who lost their lives, but also for those surviving, all long forgotten by the leadership. Centering on naval history, the only naval battle between Greece and Turkey in the last 100 years, Dimitris Mitsatsos narrates his personal journey, revealing unknown aspects of historical events. He speaks of ideals, values, and human moments, of people he met and places he traveled to during his turbulent life, providing us with a valuable historical and human testimony. With an insightful gaze, sensitivity, and courage, he delivers a message of strength and character in the continuous struggle against adversity and the misfortunes imposed by the Greek state, as well as a message of resilience in the face of tragic moments, when every aspect of life is abruptly overturned.

  • Because it uncovers a long-hidden and classified chapter of modern Greek history, shedding light on a secret naval mission that remained unknown to the public for more than five decades.
  • Because it tells a gripping, real-life story of courage, sacrifice, and survival, following a young officer whose life is forever changed by war and its aftermath.
  • Because it offers a rare and deeply human firsthand testimony, combining historical insight with emotional depth, and leaving a lasting impression on every reader.

Dimitris Mitsatsos, whose family hails from the island of Psara, was born and raised in Athens. His love for the sea and ships led him to the Hellenic Naval Academy, from which he graduated in 1956. In the summer of 1964, he was assigned a secret mission to Cyprus as the commander of the patrol boat PHAETHON. Following the battle on August 8, which resulted in the loss of crew members and cost him his own limb, Mitsatsos turned the page. At the age of 28, he returned to the classroom, this time at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) to study Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. He subsequently held various executive positions in land-based industry and shipyards. In 1983, he organized and, until 2020, directed the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association (HELMEPA). Today, he holds the rank of Commodore of the Hellenic Navy in the status of War Reserve.
